Gary 's Fastbreakers

December 14, 2005

The Annual Private Practice was held on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 in Comcast Center . Following practice the team, coaching staff and members of Gary 's Fastbreakers were treated to a buffet dinner. Each player sat with the person compiling his scrapbook as well as other fans. Following dinner many autographs were obtained. The players were especially good with the children in attendance.

Steve Hyman, president of Gary 's Fastbreakers , welcomed everyone and thanked Norma Griffiths (and other helpers) who planned and executed the event. In addition Norma provided homemade cookies for those present.

The three assistant coaches, Michael Adams, Keith Booth and Rob Moxley spoke briefly. Keith Booth told of how he remembered the Fastbreaker activities from his days as a player and how much it meant to him. He said he still peruses his scrapbooks periodically.

Michael Adams spoke of his days playing for Gary at Boston College and how happy he was to be on the staff. He mentioned that he left a head coaching position to accept this hob.

All of the coaches expressed their appreciation to the Fastbreakers for their support.

Respectively submitted,

Althea V. Miller, secretary

The executive committee of Gary 's Fastbreakers met at Ledo's Restaurant on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at 5:00 P.M. with the following present: Sam and Helen Frank, Buck and Barb Hartley, Pary Harris, Steve Hyman, Frank and Althea Miller, Jean Nodine and Jim Routh.

Steve Hyman, president, reported that there is currently $148,000 in the endowment and $31,000 on the College Park Foundation.

Barb Hartley, chairperson of the raffle, reported that Travis Garrison was the recipient of the scholarship. She asked for input concerning the raffle prizes. The decision was for 1 st prize to be two (2) ACC tournament tickets plus $600 cash and 2 nd prize an autographed basketball (by the 2005-6 team) plus $250.

Leslie Hyman will format the tickets and order them with the intent of having them available for sale prior to Maryland Madness on November 14.

Barb asked for volunteers to man tables selling raffle tickets. She indicated that there are 18 home games, therefore 36 workers are needed in order to have two tables again this year. She will be available for 14 games. Volunteers are needed!

Jim Routh, membership chair, will compile a membership list with e-mail addresses. This will enable the membership to be contacted more quickly when necessary. Please advise Jim Routh at JRouth@aol.com of any address changes.

Several possible events were discussed. 1) Sam Frank is attempting to schedule the annual practice and chalk talk. 2) The possibility of a dinner prior to Maryland Madness was discussed. It was decided not to attempt that this year. 3) Steve is exploring the possibility of a “Fastbreaker tailgate” prior to a football game. The Boston College game is being considered. Details will be sent to the membership if this can be worked out.

Steve has reserved a block of tickets for a Wizards game (vs. Orlando ) for February6, 2006.

There was discussion about placing an ad promoting Gary 's Fastbreakers in the basketball program. Steve will contact Marketing.

Pary Harris, scrapbook chair, is in need of persons to assemble scrapbooks. Please contact her if you are able make this commitment. If you are unable to commit but would like to assist, daily papers are needed. Please contact Pary at paryharri@msn.com if you are willing to help in any way.

Gary 's Fastbreakers met on Tuesday, June 14 at Heritage Hall for a Post Season Meeting. The following members were present: Steve Hyman, Jim Routh, Jack Heise, Jean Nodine, Jack Zane, Judy Zane, Althea Miller, Frank Miller, Fabian Jimenez, Scott Werber, Barbara Hartley, Carol Baker, Bob Baker, Felix Jacob, Rick Furlough, Norma Griffiths, Pary Harris, Karel Petraitis, Helen Frank, Sam Frank, Randy Schmidt, Sue Schmidt and Mel Keller. Steve Hyman, president, announced that this was a special day, in that Gary Williams was hired 16 years ago today.

Steve reported that Chris McCray is the recipient of the Fastbreakers scholarship. He stated that there is $22,000 in the general account and $170,000 in the endowment. He proposed that the structure of the dues be changed to $75.00 for the general account and $75.00 for scholarships.

Barb Hartley, chair of the raffle committee, reported that sales totaled $7,721 for the 2004-2005 season. The increase in sales was attributed to having two tables (first time in Comcast) set up and the mailing of raffle tickets to members. Of the total receipts $5,241 was sold prior to games. The expenses this year were $1253 with net profit being $6468 which was double of the profit of last year. Barb suggested that a 2 nd prize be awarded next year.

Pary Harris, chairperson of the scrapbooks, suggested that scrapbooks be presented to players prior to the banquet (similar to the way it is done at the football banquet.) She also expressed concern that some people are agreeing to assemble scrapbooks and then not following through. Someone else has stepped up at the last minute or the player has not received a scrapbook.

Steve asked for volunteers to chair an events committee. Norma Griffiths and Fabian Jimenez agreed to serve in that capacity. Some activities discussed were the private practice, chalk talk, an NBA Draft Party, an outing to the new Legends of Camden Yards and a bus to away basketball games (no tickets, just transportation). It was mentioned the private practice needs to be “tightened up”. The numbers have gotten too large…too many non-Fastbreakers. Since very little interest was expressed in the NBA Draft Party that was dismissed. Steve and Norma agreed to explore the possibility of visiting the Legends Museum followed by an Orioles game. Jack Zane will be a resource for this activity in that he was instrumental in developing the University of Maryland exhibit. A show of hands was requested concerning a bus to away basketball games (transportation only)…little interested was expressed.

Jim Routh agreed to chair the membership committee.

Karel Petraitis will review the by-laws.

Steve announced that each Fastbreaker will receive a copy of The Legends . Last year the “membership” gift was a framed picture of Testudo.

A question was raised about involvement in the Gary Williams Golf Tournament. Can the Fastbreakers assist in any way or possibly sponsor a hole? Steve will inquire about these possibilities.

Officers for the coming year were elected as follows: President-Steve Hyman; Vice President-Sam Frank and Secretary-Althea Miller.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 .

Respectfully submitted,

Althea V. Miller
